In 2023, the picturesque stone village of Chharka, nestled on the roof of the world, proudly achieved open defecation-free status, thanks to the Toilet Project generously funded by Die Bambusschule e.V, Germany, and Schmitz-Stiftung Germany. Implemented by Dolpo Tomorrow in collaboration with the villagers of Chharka, the project successfully built water-independent compost toilets for all 73 households and 2 community monasteries. The success of this project extends beyond promoting health; it empowers villagers to safeguard against waterborne diseases and helps create a resilient community living in healthy environments.
Composting toilets: A sustainable sanitation solution
Due to the extreme cold weather, water in the toilet bowl freezes during winter in Dolpo unless the toilet is insulated or built inside the house. Addressing this issue with a sustainable solution, we introduced the water-independent compost toilet.
The key architectural elements of the constructed toilets include:
– A septic tank for efficient waste collection and decomposition
– A ventilation and exhaust system ensuring airflow and odor elimination
– An access point for the removal of humus
– An RCC slab partitioning the chamber of the toilet and the septic tank
Composting toilets require a carbon source like husk, sawdust, or ash to:
– Drain moisture
– Improve aeration
– Facilitate the composting process of waste
In Chharka, ash serves as the primary carbon source, considering that every household in Dolpo generates a significant amount of ash daily due to the prevalent use of firewood stoves for cooking. Alternatively, husk serves as nutritious animal feed for the animals raised by the community.
Importantly, the physical design of the toilets harmoniously blends with the stone village of Chharka, avoiding any significant cultural or architectural contrast that could compromise the beauty of this culturally rich village situated on the roof of the world. The success of this project is a testament to the collaborative efforts of the community, local organizations, and international partners.
As we celebrate this achievement, we recognize the ongoing need for similar initiatives in neighboring villages. Your support can contribute to extending the benefits of improved sanitation and hygiene practices. Join us in creating lasting positive change in Dolpo. Donate or volunteer today.
