Ensuring Day-to-Day Functioning Through Teacher Recruitment, Supplies, and Student Support
Currently attended by 80 students from Chharka and nearby villages, CBS offers education from nursery to grade 10 and serves as the sole access to education for the children of this remote terrain. The school follows the national curriculum of Nepal and includes teachings in the Tibetic language, local history, arts, and basic Buddhist philosophy to preserve the unique Tibetic culture of Dolpo. The government of Nepal provides three teachers and limited funding for the school. However, corruption and the extreme geographical conditions limit the efficiency of the aid. Dolpo Tomorrow, as an NGO rooted in Chharka, bridges these gaps, ensuring the school’s day-to-day functioning and ongoing development, relying on donations and sponsors.
Every year, Dolpo Tomorrow, from its own funds and funding provided by the school’s sponsors: ICDF, Die Bambusschule e.V, Save Tibet, and Himalaya Currents Inc., recruits a team of approximately seven teachers, a program coordinator, an academic supervisor, and a cook to run the school. We also annually equip the school with essential educational supplies provided free of cost to students.
The harsh climate of Dolpo only provides a limited time window for the school to function. The team of teachers hired for the summer session and the teachers designated by the government travel to Chharka in April, operate the school for 6 months from May through October, and leave Chharka in November.
To ensure that students have sufficient time to complete their yearly academic course, relying on our local teachers, the school conducts extension winter classes for an additional 2 months, in November and December.
We assist the school in managing a hostel facility to accommodate students from nomad families and those from nearby villages.
During the harsh winter months, Dolpo Tomorrow’s annual winter school program, financed exclusively by Die Bambusschule e.V, ensures continued education for higher-grade students. Those above grade 7 migrate to Kathmandu, attending the winter boarding school, where they not only continue their schooling but also get a chance to explore the world beyond their community.
For the students who graduate from Chharka School, we support them with their basic living expenses and college fees in Kathmandu for their further study.
