Traditionally, the people of Dolpo, living in a sparsely inhabited wilderness, did not prioritize the need for toilets in their houses. The agro-pastoral lifestyle kept them outdoors, making open defecation a convenient and practical practice. While some families used traditional water-independent compost toilets, the majority did not use toilets at all. Access to clean running water was relatively easy due to their close proximity to nature.
However, the rapidly changing lifestyle in Dolpo, with more people residing in the village year-round and an increase in the population of residents and visitors, has led to visible impacts such as open defecation and a lack of safe drinking water. These issues are triggering various health problems and diseases.
In our commitment to improve the quality of life for the people of Dolpo through sustainable development initiatives, alongside our health and education projects, we focus on providing access to safe drinking water, eliminating open defecation, and promoting sustainable waste management. Concentrating on the village of Chharka, we have successfully implemented two projects:
In 2023, the picturesque stone village of Chharka, nestled on the roof of the world, proudly achieved open defecation-free status, thanks to the Toilet Project generously funded by Die Bambusschule e.V, Germany, and Schmitz-Stiftung Ger…. Read More

Our goal is to expand the scope of our projects to cover the neighboring villages of Chharka in Dolpo, addressing the pressing need for clean water and improved sanitation.
